Blessed are the pure of heart, for they shall see God. (Matthew 5:8)

I think when people come across this scripture, it turns them off, they know that on a surface level there is no way they are pure of heart- not totally pure, not in that way. I am not pure of heart. I have done wrongs, betrayed, not honored my word and I sometimes find myself thinking thoughts (towards myself and others) that are far from compassionate.

That being said, does this mean I should walk away from the ability and chance to know God?

“Pure of heart” is not perfection and abstinence and washing every person’s dirty feet. In my opinion, in my experience, pure of heart is a moment without delusion, without illusion, without fear, without our perceptions being altered by all the things we want and don’t have and are afraid will come. “Pure of heart” simply means seeing life for what it is.

Being still and knowing that right here, right now, we are being and becoming simultaneously.

“For they shall see God.” In this pure of heart, perception without illusion, seeing this moment for what it is, especially our sins, taking ownership of who we are, we will see ourselves. To see God is to see ourselves. To see God is to know ourselves, in all things.

“Blessed are the pure of heart.”

-Yes, we are blessed if we can walk through the world and see what is without delusion. Yes, we are blessed if we can know ourselves. Yes, we are blessed if we can get past all the stories that have been told about us, all the stories that we have told about us and get to that place of “I am”-  before the I am “this”, “that”, “man”, “woman.”

Beyond all that storytelling and all that delusion is who we really are. God’s currently dressed up in human form. Living in a God filled world surrounded by God’s currently dressed up like rocks and trees and ocean and sky and birds and your mother and your father and the person bugs you the most – yes even them.

Blessed are the pure of heart, for they shall see God. (Matthew 5:8)
