It is impossible to do good work when you have to worry about money. As an artist, I should only focus on doing good work. This is difficult in the best of circumstances.
Considerations about budgets and money while working are creative poison. Whether the idea requires five hours or fifty has no bearing on the quality of the outcome. Simultaneously, if we are in the thing itself, meaning surviving from what we make, not worrying about financials is not an option either.
For, life is not predictable, and worrying about money is stressful, and what’s worse, this fear and desperation will show up in our work, in our lives.
More interesting and more difficult are questions about the creative direction of one’s life…
- Is this still the artist I am?
- Is this still what I am committing to saying/making/sharing?
- How can I be bolder and braver with my art?
