Wait a minute, isn’t happiness why we’re here? Isn’t happiness good for us?
That’s why we smiley face emoji all the time and with everything.
And yet, striving for happiness is an almost guaranteed let down for disappointment.
Before happiness becomes a liberation, it is first a burden. There’s the anger you didn’t know better. The anger at yourself for what you’ve allowed. The grief for lost time. The strangling necessity to push people, things, ideas out, out because there’s no room for them. There’s the loneliness and isolation that accompanies the growth of self. There the new boundary lines and the opening of eyes that would rather be shut.
We have to come to that place where the striving isn’t such work. We end up often, just like in The Alchemist, realizing the treasure was right where the journey began. Here. Always here. Now.
