Entering your twenties is exhilarating enough on its own. You’re no longer a teenager and you can experience the world in a whole new light. For some, this newfound freedom and independence means partying the entire decade away, but that’s a good way of letting it pass you by.

Your twenties are important. Here are twenty things you must do before you’re no longer twenty anymore.

  1. Learn to Say No

Some people probably think your twenties are the years to say “yes” to absolutely everything and to deal with the results, but your twenties are also when you should learn to say “no.” The pressure of saying yes to please others is surmounting. Sometimes figuring out what you don’t want is the best way to figure out what you do want.

  1. Find Your Real Friends

Maybe you’re coming home from college and meeting up with the same high school crew, only to realize you don’t really click with your clique anymore. That’s OK. Be open to accepting that the friends of your past may not be the friends of your future.

  1. Discover Yourself

This seems like a pretty broad suggestion, but basically – find your passion. Chase that passion and see where it leads you.

  1. Travel

Chances are that by this point in your life you haven’t explored much beyond your home state. Take these years as an opportunity to travel the world, alone or with a group.

  1. Stay Out all Night

Okay, I know I said not to party your twenties away, but do this at least once. The hangovers will hurt the least now.

  1. Put Your Phone Down

Unless you want to support the stereotype of being that darn generation glued to their phones, put it down. For a day, week, weekend, whatever. But learn to separate yourself from the liking frenzy on Instagram.

  1. Charity

You probably have the least amount of bills and responsibilities right now that you’ll ever have for the rest of your life. So donate your time and support a cause that’s meaningful to you.

  1. Cook

Learn to cook. Take a class or don’t, but get in the kitchen and make a mess.

  1. Learn a Language

Do you really want to go the rest of your life only mastering one language? Broaden your horizons and explore a new language whether it’s with a class or on your own. Look hard enough and you’ll definitely find multi-lingual options available in your city to learn and practice a new language.

  1. Get Involved

Whether it be a club, sports team or fantasy league, involve yourself.

  1. Say Thank You

You’re no longer an angsty teenager rebelling against his or her parents. You’re on your way to adulthood. Connect with your parents, and thank them.

  1. Try Something You Thought You’d Never Try

Whether it’s jumping out of plane, surfing or conquering your fear, do the thing that’s the least like you.

  1. Fall in and Out of Love

I’m not going to tell you that you need to meet your future spouse in your twenties, but fall in love. And when that love ends, don’t be afraid to let it go.

  1. Take a Risk

Perhaps moving to the city for a dream internship scares the heck out of you, but that’s no reason not to do it. Now is the exact time to do it.

  1. Vote

Regardless of your political views, it is important to contribute and to have a voice. Registering to vote is a good step.

  1. Change up Your Style

From preppy to hipster and everything in-between. Mix it up.

  1. Plan

This is the time to be wild and free, but it’s also the time to set your goals before you miss the chance to achieve them.

  1. Start a Workout Routine

This will follow you and evolve for the rest of your life, so get started now. Take care of your body while you’re still young.

  1. Question Everything

Now’s the time that people are going to tell you what to do, what to think and will, as a result, sculpt you into the person you’ll be, so question it all.

  1. Keep a Journal

Put all your feelings, thoughts and dreams on a page. One day when you’re older, you’ll want to revisit it all.

 

Since you’re already in your twenties, you’re off to a good start. Now you just have to go out there and do it.
