Most people feel that courage and fearlessness are inherent qualities—aspects of their personality. They are either brave people or they are not. They either have it or they don’t.

But courage and fearless actions can be learned and developed with great joy and enthusiasm.

  1. Challenge the Thought
    Many of our great philosophers and spiritual teachers have given us tools for inquiry…ways to challenge the truth and validity of the thought that is now causing your fear. If you can slow down enough to thoroughly challenge a frightening thought or belief, you can dissolve its power on the spot.
  2. Immunize Yourself
    Just as we get vaccinated against a devastating disease by injecting a tiny micro version of the disease into the system, there are ways to practice doing micro-versions of what you fear until the fear of the real thing is no longer there.
  3. Reboot the Serenity Prayer
    The world-famous prayer centers in most people’s minds on serenity and wisdom, but its secret power is in the part of the prayer that beckons courage.
  4. Stop Taking It Seriously
    Fear often shows up when we think we have a serious problem. It also starts to creep in when we start taking our relationships and our careers too seriously. The antidote is counter-intuitive, but very effective.
  5. Meditate
    Until we develop an inner life of quiet strength and ever-increasing well-being, we will remain vulnerable to the outer world’s whims and changes.
  6. Create a Physical Challenge
    Forgetting the mind-body-spirit continuum can lead to a life that feels unsafe and overwhelming. There is a near-miraculous effect that physical strength has upon mental strength and courage, so it’s good to work out.
  7. Work Outside Your Personality
    Most fear is caused by an over-identification with our illusory, fabricated, insubstantial personality that we take to be our true identity. The less we feed the ego, the less we have to fear.
  8. Create a Support Team
    Get a coach. Ask for help. Be vulnerable. Find a support group. You are not in this alone. Others have gone before you. Let them help.
  9. Put Something Ahead of Fear
    A huge and exciting project can be motivating and inspiring enough to make the butterflies that come up in its pursuit no big deal compared to the quest.
  10. Use Your Robot
    Imagine an emotionless clone of yourself. Call it your robot. Let it do what you are afraid to do. How this works will be explained.
